Recently I upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP. After
that migration, I THOUGHT that I had found a
backup/restore utility under Accessories/Systems and made
a backup set of disks. A week or so my hard drive failed
and Dell provided me with a new one. I formatted, added
Windows ME and then upgraded to XP. I am trying to
restore some files but cannot find the backup/restore
utility. Can someone tell me where it is located? How do
I go about restoring these files?

Thank you

Chris

Hi Chris,

Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with NTBackup. But
only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup for XP
Home by performing the following steps:

Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.

For OEM Computers:

If the computer you purchased is an OEM (from Dell,Compaq etc), they might
not ship the Operating System CD. (only restore cds).
In that case, you can download ntbackup.msi from here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

This article describes how to install Backup, which is included on the
CD-ROM in the Valueadd folder. To use Backup, you have to install it
manually.

Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition

Hi!Chris!
Which version do you have? No Backup icon is present on the Start menu
in Windows XP Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs
for Windows XP Home edition. The backup program is found on the Windows
XP Home Edition CD in the Valueadd folder.

To Manually Install the Backup Utility
Insert the CD Rom and navigate to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup

When the wizard is complete, click Finish.
If it is XP Pro then it is start>all programs>accessories>system tools

regards/
