If you mean a true "server" then you'll need to begin with some server
software, like Win2000 Server or Win2003 Server. XP is not a true
server OS. This applies if you want to set up a Client-Server network
with a domain controller running the show.

If you want a Peer-to-Peer network, and are planning to use the XP box
to just share files, then that's another story.

To answer your question, you need to provide lots more details as to
what you plan on doing with your Server, how you want security
implemented, whether or not you need a domain structure...

It may be easier, if you have no idea what I'm asking, to hire a
network consultant and talk with them.

Yes, certainly. However, there is an issue with how many computers will
be connecting to the server. XP Pro, which is not a real server
operating system, allows 10 concurrent connections. This does *not*
mean 10 workstations - depending on your setup, some workstations will
be making multiple connections. If you have 5 or less workstations, it
could work with XP Pro. More than that and it will be to your advantage
to use a real server operating system. If you choose Microsoft, then
that means some flavor of Server 2003. If you don't know how to do
this, then have an outside network person set it up for you or you will
have a lot of problems.
