Only if there is another wireless access point nearby to which you can
connect to.

Hi,

What do you plan on connecting to if he has no wireless router? Is his
connection one of the modem/router types commonly used nowadays? Does he
have a wireless access point?

Well you could work wired to it, but wireless does not work if there is
not a wireless connection in the area.

Thanks for answering.
Would it be possible to just plug her line into my computer and be able to
access the internet?
These questions sound dumb but I am new to wireless and would really like to
be able to take it with me when I go to visit her.
Her computer is not wireless and she has a regular high speed hookup.
Thanks

Well, if its setup to be shared, meaning your friend's wireless is shared,
you should be able to connect to the net. When I go to my brothers whose,
its setup automatically for me to connect to the net, at first he had to
enter the routers credentials and encryption key then have it saved during
the Connect to Wireless network wizard.

No, of course not. That's like asking if you can use your vacuum
cleaner at your friends house if he has no electricity.

Hi,

Yes, as long as your laptop has a LAN port (the wide one), you can plug in
and use her connection in most cases. The few that you can't are because the
service provider locks the connection by mac address. You should have your
friend check about her connection modem, many of the ones used in the US now
include a wireless access point.

Yes - leech off a neighbor or get him a wireless router.

Are you smoking dope or what? There is NO wireless router at the OP's
friend's place. Can you read? Of course your stupid top posting has dropped
everything below your "sig" line. Learn how to post on Usenet.

Cheers.

As others have responded, in a fashion... the salient question here is: does
your friend have a router or just a cable/dsl modem to which he/she directly
connects to their PC? (I know you said they didn't have a -wireless- router
but you did not indicate if they had a wired router...) If the former, you
should be able to connect to the router via an ethernet cable, if the
latter, as others have replied, depends on whether their service is tied to
a MAC address or not. Each network card, be it wireless or wired, has an
individual MAC address. If your friend's cable/dsl is tied to their PC's MAC
address, then, no, you won't be able to use it.

Good luck,

Lang

Thank you for your answer. Her computer is connected with a cable/dsl modem
so I guess I won't be able to hook into it while I am there.

Sharyn,
There are free "hotspots" in most major cities where you can use your
wireless. Some cities even have free wireless in the downtown areas.
Look for a Starbucks or MacDonald's that usually have free wireless.

Some cable modems have more than one connecting port, so you might still be
able
to connect your computer using an ethernet cable. Mine has 4 actually for
connecting
up to 4 devices.

I see another person has responded that some cable/dsl modems have more than
one port... that would probably work for you... the other point is that even
if your friend's modem only has one port... if the port is -not- tied to a
MAC address, you can probably use the modem, although your friend would have
to disconnect their PC to allow you to attach your PC.

In any event... good luck!
