Using a VNP-Connection with L2TP

Florian Weidinger

I have the following problem. When I try to use a VNP-
Connection with L2TP to connect to a W2K-RAS-Server
(configured as VNP-Server) I get this errormessage:

"Fehler 789: Der L2TP-Verbindungsversuch ist
fehlgeschlagen, da ein Verarbeitungsfehler während der
ersten Sichereheitsaushandlung mit dem Remotecomputer
aufgetreten ist."

This error apears whether I have configured IP-Sec or not.
I apears whether I have starded the W2K-RAS-Server or not.

Can someone tell me, why this error apears?

To resolve this issue, you can use a preshared key on both ends of the VPN
connection. The L2TP/IPSec feature supports gateway-to-gateway VPN
implementations by using a preshared key for Internet Key Exchange (IKE)
authentication.

To Set Preshared Key on the client side - Go to Network Connections -> Right
Click On the Connectoid -> go to Security Tab and then Click on IPSec
Settings and give a Key

To Set Preshared Key on the Server side - Run rrasmgmt.msc -> Right click on
the RRAS Server -> go to Properties -> Security - > Click the check box
"Allow Custom IPSec Policy for L2TP Connection" and enter the pre shared
Key.
