Using a switch to access the internet

I have two desktop PCs. One using Vista Business The other using XP home with
service pack2 I have recently installed a switch to allow me to logon to the
the internet from either PC I have an ADSL ISP. From either PC using a direct
Ethernet connection through the Modem to my ISP I achieve data rates of
approximately 1.3 megabits. When I connect to my ISP from my Vista PC through
the new switch I achieve similar rates. When I use the XP PC through the
switch I only achieve rates of about 56K. This happens regardless of whether
the Vista PC is connected the switch or not. Can you offer any explanation as
to why this should happen.

Aussie-Reg again. I have since circumvented the problem by using a
USB/ETHERNET connection going to the switch instead of the ETHERNET card. IT
raises the possibility of a random problem with the ETHERNET card. I find it
confusing that the results were always consistent. Going straight from the
ethernet card to the modem always worked. Going to the modem via the switch
from the ethernet card always had problems. As far as I am concerned I have a
bypass and am no longer concerned with the original problem.
