Using a French XP Product key on English XP?

Hey everyone. I just bought a French ThinkPad which has XP Professional in
French. I'm thinking I'd like to go back to English XP for now. If I have a
copy of Windows XP in English, can I install this and use my XP French
product key to activate it, or are the product keys language specific?

I have no idea if the keys are language specific - but I would bet there are
differences that won't allow it. In any case - are these CDs of the same
type? I am assuming this is a laptop - is the copy of XP Professional
(english) you have an OEM copy you purchased seperately some time ago or is
it a retail copy that you have lost the key for?
