Phil

Hi ,
I'm using windows mail on my deskside computer (a powerfull gamer
configuration). During my next holidays I will use my laptop to store my
photos and still having contact with my family and friends.
Is it possible to use windows mail on the laptop and when getting back home
merging my holiday's mails into my deskside computer mail ?
Both PC are runing Vista Home Premium.
I hope you'll excuse my bad english, I'm a 59 old froggy.

Thanks for helping.

For incoming mail you do not have a problem, because you can configure WM to
leave a copy of each mail on the server until you get back home. Tools
Menu>Accounts>select your account>advanced tab, do this setting on both
machines.

For mail that you send, if you really need them twice? You can include
yourself as a cc: or bcc: in every mail that you send, when you have
download them to your desktop inbox simply move them to the sent items
folder, the to and from will be messed up but at least you have the mails on
both machines.

No, it is not possible to "merge" the mail stores of two computers.
The workaround suggested by "mac" works but it's anything but
comfortable this way. In the past I had been suffering from using mail
on several computers and having nothing in sync :-( :-(

The only really workable solution would be to use IMAP.
Check whether your mail provider offers IMAP. If not, look around for
providers who offer it.

Just a short explanation:
With IMAP the whole mail store with all folders and subfolders is
sitting on the mail-server (only a copy held locally).
So on opening WinMail and/or any other mail-client (f.e. Outlook) you
will have the same data. What has been read on the laptop will be seen
as read on the desktop machine too; what's been deleted on the desktop
machine will not appear on the laptop; a copy of everything sent from
any computer will be seen in the sent_mail folder of all computers;
everything sorted to a folder will be seen in the same folder in all
computers.

I have been working with IMAP for almost a decade and I really wouldn't
know how to do without.
I hope you'll excuse my bad english, I'm a 59 old froggy.

Come on, your English is not bad at all! I wish all native speakers if
English would be able to express themselves that perfectly well.
Anyway, we always have to remember the saying "Since Latin no longer is
in use as the "lingua franca", bad English s the only common language in
the world" <bg>

Many Thnks to Mac and Rainald
I think for this summer I'll use Mac's workaround and after that I'll try
using IMAP, but my provider (free.fr) offers only POP.
Have a nice day

De nada ;-)
Thanks fro the reply.

It's really worth changing the provider. There would be no problem with
the change of the address as you can keep the old account and set an
"autoforward" in order to have things re-directed to the new account.
Make the move, the sooner, the better. You'll benefit from it day by
day.

All the best
Rainald
