Got a strange thing; when I want to check my mail, suddenly a window pops
out where I have to type my username and password. This pops up even I have
set it to remember my username and password. I have tried to delete my mail
server and reinstall it but it keeps popping up still. I dont know what has
happened, before it ran without problems and I have not made any new
settings. Can someone help?

Same here! I have turned my anti-virus e-mail scanning off (AVG) but this
bloody annoying little window pops up asking for username and password. I
type them in, bingo, up it pops again!! BTW. This is after my THIRD re
install of VISTA!!!

It is quite likely that this problem is caused by your antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or
Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

After you have done the above, if the problem continues,
it means the account was corrupted by the antivirus.
Delete the account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that
account.

Funny thing; I have done nothing and suddenly it works again without popping
up asking for username and password.
I don't know what has happened....

It still could be intermittent interference from your antivirus,
or else it was a temporary malfunction at the mail server.

Hi Gary,

Ok, but now it works perfect. I run AVG free antivirus.

I don't know, will you fix my car without me telling you what's
wrong with it?
Any error messages when you try to send or receive?

OK, we'll chalk it up to a temporary server malfunction.

Exactly the same thing happened to me (Vista, windows mail) with my
newsgroups. Drove me to distraction, after about 5 hours it stopped doing
that. Nothing I tried cured it, it just self-corrected.

If you want to keep Norton you'll have to live with the consequences.
For me, I'd rather have dependable mail then be married to a specific
antivirus program.

My judgment is based on thousands of cases posted to this forum
since I became a regular responder here in February. As an engineer
and scientist I don't make snap judgments. I stand by my
recommendations which are based on overwhelming evidence.

Until I see more evidence that the recent Windows Update caused
this problem, I am discounting that possibility. Still, one can never
be 100% sure about anything in this business. Stranger things
have happened.
How much time would it take to uninstall Norton, reboot and test
your system, and then reinstall Norton if you were convinced it
wasn't the culprit? 20 minutes tops? That 20 minutes is good
investment for the piece of mind you get knowing you've
ruled out one possible source of the problem.
If you do uninstall Norton, the mail account will need to be
recreated since it has likely been corrupted by Norton.

Glad to help out.

Uninstalling Norton to rule it out as a problem is a great idea. I
wasn't thinking about "uninstalling" it with that in mind.
Unfortunately I used Acronis last night to get rid of the problem
(pressed for time lately.) So, doing that now would not tell me
anything as once again everything is fine. But if it happens again I
will do what you suggested.

Thanks for the advice....

Uncheck all the boxes that say "store password" CLose mail program down.
Reopen mail program and then hit send/recieve mail. It will ask you for your
password and info. At that time select save creditials. Thats it. Will save
even after reopening the mail program
