Hope I have the right newsgroup here. If not, maybe someone can
redirect me.

We are two medical transcriptionists who have to share a computer at
work. We have HUNDREDS of "shortcuts" in AutoCorrect but
unfortunately we can't agree on all of them, and each need our own
set.

Back in Windows 98 (and Office 97) I could set up multiple user
profiles such that when running Word 97 on the same PC, each profile
could have a separate AutoCorrect (.acl) file. I am trying to figure
out how to do this now with Office 2000 and Windows 2000. I don't
have Admin access on the PC in question (drat!) but the folks in the
Computer Dept. don't know about setting up .acl files for AutoCorrect
so I need to be able to tell them how to do it...

Let's say the default login uses "user1.acl". I want a separate login
that uses "user2.acl". They have set up a profile for me as "user2"
but I'm guessing they have to set up a true profile for "user1" to log
in also (instead of just a default login?). Once that is
accomplished, how do I edit the registry so each profile uses the
correct .acl file? I have already got two .acl files ready to go,
just need to link them up to profiles somehow.

I hope I have explained the problem!

If you have two separate logins, then user1 and user2 will automatically
have two separate profiles, including Office data. With Win 2000, the
Autocorrect files will be named MSO1033.ACL and will be located in
C:\Documents and Settings\user1\Application Data\Microsoft\Office and
C:\Documents and Settings\user2\Application Data\Microsoft\Office.

You'll also have separate NORMAL.DOT file and custom dictionaries.

Thanks for your reply!

I didn't see any files named MSO1033 but through testing I am sure
that "trans1.acl" is the one being used by AutoCorrect at present,
under the "default" login. I will look to see what changes happen
when the two profiles are set up.

Can I assume that once the profiles are set up, I can take the
existing .acl files and copy them to the appropriate directories, then
rename them MSO1033.acl so the existing autocorrect list will be used?
(The current .acl file being used is sitting in the WINDOWS directory,
not under Documents and Settings.)

The actual filename may vary depending on the versions Of Word and Office
you're running and on the installation history. If the system was
upgraded from a previous version of Office or Windows, it may continue
using the same filenames and locations as before the upgrade.

What I typically do when moving to a new system is to open Word and make a
trivial change to the autocorrect list. Then close Word and do a search
for *.acl. You should find one ACL file with the current date and time.
That's the one you want to replace with your saved copy.
