User Name Change Issue

It seems that KB Article 323000 referring on how to change
a users login name has some issues....
The process explained in this article does do what it
claims however the end result is not acceptable.
Once you go nto this process then log the new user name
into Active Directory the 1st thing it complains about is
that the "users Desktop folder has been moved or is not
accessible".
The 2nd issue seems to be that if the user clicks the
Start button it does nothing.
This is the case in both the users local PC and the users
login into Terminal Services.
The reason for the user name change is in the past our
company used Unix, there is an 8 character limitation for
login names in Unix (at that time) no then as we move out
of the Unix subsystem I want to be rid of the Truncated
login names.
I have tried to reset permissions on the users folder to
that of the new user name and even deleted the truncated
user from the security tab prior to the addition even
forcing replication in the domain prior as well.
This still causes issues, and going back to the users
security tab on the folder I am finding that the old
truncated name still is applied?
3 years ago we "migrated" from Win NT Domain to Active
Directory. In the NT life they used Roaming Profiles which
I have found since the migration has been a big pain in
the But#.
Before doing the name change I tested this process on a
newly created user in AD, this user has "no problems"
Could this be a SID issue?
I have not tried to delete the user from AD yet so I want
to bounce this off of all of you.
Hope you can help.
BTW, I have searched until my fingers are blue the MS
knowledge base, turning up nothing with my search queries.
Thanks

This shouldn't have anything to do with permissions-- renaming a user is
really a cosmetic thing: the SID is the same and that's what truly
identifies the account (and is what gets used in access control entries)

Well...
I agree but I had to beat the dead horse, however the
issue is that once the users name is changed including the
login name they no longer can access their desktop folder
from their local PC or through Terminal Services, nor can
they open the Start menu.
Wouldn't you think that MS would have foreseen this
problem?
We want to accomplish one thing, make this as painless for
the user as possible with little or no Administrative
intervention.
At this point it seems that I will need to visit each
user I change and re-create their desktop environment, and
possibly delete their user folder contained in the
Documents and Settings folder on thier local PC, for this
was the solution that allowed them to use Terminal
Services and giving them access to the Start menu
errrrr
Thanks
