user name and password

Dear readers: Today a customer brought in a computer with
Windows XP Pro installed. For some reason, on the user's
logon screen, even correct password enters, after about 10
seconds and the screen came back and asking for the user
name and password. Tried other user's names and passwords,
the problem remained.

I had download a utility program and reset the
administrator's password to blank. Nothing worked. I
already spent over 4 hours and zero.

Any idea how I can fix this problem ?? I knew I can
reinstall Windows XP over and problem should gone. But I
want to find out a better way to fix this crazy problem.
In case next time.
