User ID ICon missing

I have XP home version . Normally when booting up I get to the blue screen .
To the left it says Xp ... to the right are the pictured ICONS with the user
ids. In my case I have 2 defined. The probem is they are gone. There is
nothing on the left side of the screen. I tried ctrl,alt,delete and it takes
me to a black background with a small userid password screen. The default ID
is my ID. I enter the password and the message is .... unlnown
id/password.... whats wrong? Where did the icons go and why isnt it taking
the password?

Try restoring your system to an earlier date using System Restore in safe
