User accounts / kids etc !

Across the years I've never had much to do with setting up user accounts /
administrator priveleges etc.

I'm about to install XP for my brother, onto his PC, (I gave it to him a
year or so ago after I'd outlived it). It used to have W98se on it, the
hardware should be sufficient for XP and what they're likely to use it for
.... i.e. AMD 1.4ghz Athlon Thunderbird core / Asus A7A22 motherboard / 786mb
pc2100/ddr266 / 20gb hd.

During that time his kids damaged W98se in addition to stuffing all manor of
progs. into it.

So can anyone advise me as which is the best XP platform with a view to
setting up admistrator priveleges / user accounts etc. so that his children
can't install programs and also cannot access the internet unless he (..the
father) is present.

If anyone can post me a quick list, to save me hours of reading and lots of
trial and error, it would be MUCH appreciated.

regards, Richard

For a home system like you describe - XPHome would be the easiest - but XPPro
would offer more security features to use.

Unfortunately, using these security features is a bit daunting at times.
I'd suggest that you check out the free Microsoft Shared Computer ToolKit
(available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sharedaccess/default.mspx ) It's a great
tool and I've used a few of the features on my sons' computers.

But, with kids, nothing succeeds like involvement! The more that you look,
the more that you find.

Also, a nice free program for preventing access to harmful sites is
http://www.we-blocker.com Please be advised that you must DISABLE Fast User
Switching for it to work with XP!!!

Finally, set him up with some good antivirus and antispyware applications -
then harden the system using some additional security tools. But, don't be
surprised when the kids find ways around it. My oldest averages 70
virus/spyware infestations each month - and this is with plenty of security
