User Accounts Error Message

Hello,

It appears i can no longer access the User Accounts menu in the Control
Pannel. Whenever i double-click the icon, i recieve the following error
message...

"The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

This also opens Notepad - which has no text in.

Is there a way i can correct this problem?

I am running Windows XP Home - Service Pack 2.

Thanks!

What exactly did you do when the problem started ?

System Restore is special function of Windows XP which allows you to restore
your system to a previous state exactly as it was before , so if you restore
this will probably fix the problem.

Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Resore
and restore to a state three days before the problem started.

At the end , check your computer for malware

Hey!

Thanks for the reply.

The problem has been there for about a year now, and it's only today it's
finally got the better of me and i've had enough lol, so i don't think a
System Restore is a possibility.

I've done as many malware scans as i can think of, and scanned my computer
with my virus scanner in Safe Mode (NOD 32), but the problem still seems to
be there.

But , dear , when a problem appears , you should immediately fix it or ask
for help .System Restore can generally help you but now it is too late. :(

Great to hear you use NOD32 , I am also NOD32 user ;-)
Hmmm... what you can now do is to try to do a repair install of Windows .
First make sure you use the latest version of NOD32 and then make sure you
use the latest definitions.
The latest version of NOD32 is 2.51.26
The latest definition file of the main protection is 1.1517

To download the latest version of NOD32 , go here:
http://www.eset.com/download/registered_software.php

After that , uninstall the old version using Add/Remove button in Control
Panel , restart , manually delete the folder called ESET in C:\Program files
and install the new version. Configure it correctly:

After you have the latest version , make sure your computer is malware free
and then repair Windows.

User Accounts is nusrmgr.cpl.

Do you get the error if you...
Start | Run Type: nusrmgr.cpl | Click OK?

Do you get the error if you...
Start | Run Type: control userpasswords | Click OK?

See this.

Windows® XP File Association Fixes
Copyright 2003 - Doug Knox
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Read the instructions. Then get...

CPL File Association Fix (Restore the default associations for CPL files)

If that doesn't fix it...

Run System File Checker.

System File Checker (sfc.exe) replaces screwed up system files.

Load your XP CD in your CD drive.

Start | Run | Type or paste: sfc /scannow | Click OK

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB article...

You may be prompted to insert a Windows XP Professional CD when you run the
System File Checker tool in Windows XP Home Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;897128

If SFC.EXE did anything it will be in the Event Viewer.

Open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK |
Click System | Look at any Windows File Protection
entries

Explains a whole bunch about sfc.exe.
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker
(Sfc.exe)

If that doesn't fix it, nusrmgr.cp_ can be expanded from your XP CD.
