User Account Name

Hi:

When I originally established the User Account (administrator) name for my
computer I included the special character "&" in the name.i.e. "John &
Jane", which was accepted by Windows and established. Now I find that when I
want to change or acquire certain applications it will not allow because of
this special character "&" in the Administrator Account name.

I changed the name in the User Account to read "John and Jane", but it
changed only the name for the account and other files remain the same as
previously. I have a Recovery CD for Sony and when I try to reinstall an
original application from it I get an Error Notice because "& is not
recognized as an acceptable character.

It there anyway around this problem other than reformatting? I prefer not
to establish another User Name just to allow reinstallation of this one
application.

Basically, what you changed was your full name, not the user name. This
is normal considering you tried to use User Accounts in Control Panel.
To actually change your user name, go to Start --> Run and type in
Control Userpasswords2. Click on the name you want to change (John &
Jane) and click on Properties. Remember, change the User Name, not the
Full Name. Hope this was what you were looking for. peace

Hi:

Can I do this? Create a new User whereby I can reinstall the application
into it and then copy this new User's profile back into the existing User
name "John&Jane" profile? If so, then could I delete the new User's name and
be back to where I originally started with the only exception being the
reinstalled application?

Thanks

"GTS" <x> wrote in message When you rename a user, it does not rename the user/profile folder under
Documents and Settings. That can never be renamed (and will damage your
system if you try). What you can do is create a new user and copy the
existing profile to the new user account per the instructions in
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...ll/proddocs/en-us/sysdm_userprofile_copy.mspx

No. You have to copy the old profile to the new one. Give the new one admin
rights and you will never know the difference.

No. Doing that would overwrite the John&Jane profile with the new one
losing all that's already there. Besides, it would be a good idea to get
rid of the ampersand which may cause future problems.
