My ISP (Orange) does not support Usenet Newsgroups.

How do I access these newsgroups? (Preferrably free)

Set up msnews.microsoft.com as your news server in your preferred news
reader...

Hi

Try using the following server:

msnews.microsoft.com

I would not continue with an ISP that does not have support for
reading of general newsgroups unless the price was *very* good
indeed. I have not had occasion to try non-ISP newsreaders other
than msnews.microsoft.com.

unfortunately, this seems to be the way certain of the more "popular"
(ie advertised) ISPs are going in the UK....

One may as well begin with James's letter to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support...

And only the link below has ANY relevance to the OP as that's the only
one that mentions which news`server to use....

Ya buttt, Ya buttt, butty yaaaa, Ya But, the Second and the third provide
the server msn.com.
You need to prepare the OP for the Steps as in Link 1 as example not a real
set up as in MVP michael link.

PMFJI, but that is a news server, not a news reader. Readers are things
like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Forte Agent, etc.

There's a difference between an ISP having "support for Usenet Newsgroups"
and its dismantling its UseNet servers. You'll find in some areas that the
major ISPs, under the guise of a decline in interest in UseNet (and coverage
provided by blogs and web forums), have quietly shut down their UseNet
servers. Their statistics will usually show that UseNet isn't a large part
of how the majority of their subscribers use their connections.

In reality, a large part of the issue may well be legal liability for things
like child pornography. They do *not* want to be involved in this in
*any* way, and if it's present on their servers, they may suddenly find that
they are. They generally can't see the cost benefit of policing UseNet
traffic to the degree they'd have to, so the safest, easiest and cheapest
thing to do is shut down those servers. End of liability problem.

These ISPs do, however, still support *reading* Usenet groups. You just
have to find an alternate UseNet provider. There are many, some are free,
such as the one you are reading here. The free ones (other than
manufacturer's ones like these MS servers) usually don't allow you to post.
Often, like here, the selection of groups is limited, and there are no
binaries groups.

Some carry a nominal cost, in the US$5 - US$9 per month range depending on
the amount of data you wish to be able to move. Examples are Supernews,
Giganews, NewsDawg, etc. A larger list is here:
http://www.usenet-provider.com/

And of course Google Groups is still there, it just does not support
binaries or, as far as I know, posting via anything other than their web
client.
