Have OE 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158). Use this strictly for
NNTP/usenet for public domains and one news server (earthlink) that requires
my logon.

Lately, after downloading headers from the earthlink news server, I cannot
download the corresponding message for a header that I may select. Tried
flushing the cache, no effect. No problem with msnews server.

Any idea why I can't download messages, just the headers?

Try another newsgroup on that server that you've never been to and see if
that works. If so, then the folder for the particular NG is messed up. You
can either manually delete it, or right click on it in the folder list and
go to Properties | Local File and click reset followed by compact. Then go
back to the NG and refresh it.

Compacting doesn't do anything for this. Deleting the cache for the
particular subjects does work. But, does nothing for the problem.
Tried downloading headers and messages. This does work somewhat. The
messages balk from the server if less than 2 weeks old, server does not
respond at that point. The headers do download.
Simply selecting a header results in server not responding (supposed to
download the message for that header and display it).

And, again, msnews server works fine for all of news. Headers and messages.
So, I know OE is not broken.

Check the file sizes. And if its only one NG on a given server, then its
either a server issue with the messages no longer being there or the folder
is corrupt in OE. That's why I said to do the reset and compact.

I don't know what you mean by "deleting the cache".

Have you checked with EarthLink about this problem? A lot of Internet Service
Provider has stopped supporting, or do not support / update, their Usenet
servers. Some have completely "removed" the Usenet servers from their server
banks.

The cache contains what was previously downloaded both subject and messages.
I normally download by subject only, and pick and choose which subject, thus
message that will download upon subject selection. And show in the preview
pane.

I fixed it. Completely removed the entry from OE for the earthlink news
server. Rebooted. Reentered the same information, except I changed the
name entry for the news server. This wiped out and reset everything.

Noticed even after I deleted all subject and messages by selecting "delete",
a couple of newsgroups were darker print that others. Indicating to me
there was something in there that was "stuck" if you will.
