Use GPO to Add Computers to the Domain?

Frank

Can GPO be used to add computers to the domain?

We currently have all users migrated to the new domain. Now we wnat to move
the PCs from the old NT 4.0 domain to the new W2K AD domain. We have
started by doing it manually, one at a time. With over 1000 users, this
will take forever that way.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

GPOs aren't going to help you. For a start, if the PCs you want to migrate
are in an NT4 domain, you can't even apply a GPO to them.

Have you checked out the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT)? This would
have helped you migrate your users as well, but you've already done that.

How To Set Up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Migration

As Oli wrote, no. Why did you create a new domain in the first place? You're
going to have to touch each workstation & adjust user profiles, too - should
have done more research before going down this path, I'm afraid.

We didn't create a new domain. We are a subordinate organization that had
our own independent domain. We have been instructed to move everyone and
all computers to their domain and retire ours. Our domain had had a trust
with their domain. Our users are logging on to the new domain and act as
they have before.

And, Thank you for your advice to do more research first. It will pass it
along to my superiors and see if I can get an apology.

Thanks again.

OK - so is everything working, then?

Everything except the part where all PCs need to be "touched" in order to
jion them to the domain. The current domain is going away.

Thanks

Can you move them between the domains in Users & Computers?

I don't know if it's possible to do that... or to try 'n do this:
Upgrade your NT4 domain to a 2000 domain, recreate the trusts with the
parent company domain, and move the objects that way?

just a few ideas, i don't know if they're possible, or feasible at this
point in your migration

good luck

Thanks,

I think the problem is that a workstations domain must be made on the
workstation. The workstation names have been added to AD. It just needs to
be changed on the workstation itself. One at a time, 1000 times.

I was hoping someone knew a batch or script or GPO that would accomplish
this.
