USB Unknown Device

I see posts here about USB problem but no answers or solutions.
My SanDisk cruzer was working fine until I hooked up my ULTRA external
drive. When I plugged it in it connected, but came up as an Unknown Device.
After that my SanDisk cruzer also came as an Unknown Device. My Dazzle
reader still works but that is all. I can plug the items into an external
hub and they will work through the hub but not when directly plugged into
the computer. I have tried everything short of reformatting my harddrive. Is
there a place in the register or somewhere in the config or a system file I
can modify to get this to recognize my USB drives?
Running XP Pro 2 with ALL updates on a Pent 2.4ghz machine with 1G memory.
Please help!!
Thanks,

try this, perfectly harmless.
in device manager REMOVE the USB HUBS.
shutdown the computer, wait about 5 minutes.
then power it backup and allow it to find the hubs again.
then try the stick again.

I have done that, even went to safemode and unplugged everything, removed ALL USB devices in device manager, even removed them from the reg.. and still not luck.

There hidden USB devices and there can also be conflicts
with the descriptions of the devices on each port. You
might need a USB driver update or even a BIOS update. Clear
all the USB hubs, ports and check for hidden ports.
Uninstall these and then be sure that you install (insert)
the different types of memory devices into different ports
to help keep the confusion down. Hope this helps.
