usb stick shows as "unknown device", drivers not installed

Hello, I have XP Home SP2 and 512MB USB thumb drive, used to work
fine together, as I plug in the drive, a new drive letter is assigned
in Win Xplorer.

Not anymore, now, XP Dev Manager just says "uknown device" and
Properties sheet says "drivers not installed" and Xplorer does not see
it. Of course the driver is part of SP2 and XP does recognise all
other USB devices I have.

Anything I can do (besides paying $700 for USB data recovery)? Thank
you.

Have you tried another system for data recovery?
Or a different USB port on your system?

Yes, thank you for asking, all other systems I tried, no recognition,
not even unknown device. Only my system, some ports and at some
times, sees the thumb drive as Uknown dev with no drivers. I tried to
reinstall Windows XP (have a separate system drive for that), same
problem. Tried Linux and MAC, they don't see it. Mark

Thumb drive is toast.

If there's important data on it, cough up
the $$$ to TRY (may not be successful) to
get it back.
