This is more of a hardware question -- when I plug my keychain usb disk
into my office unit (XP-sp2 OS), I get message "results will not be
optimal -- use hi-speed usb if possible" I assume this means usb 2.0 --
can a port be changed by software drivers or is this a hardware upgrade?
Thanks.

Unless the USB port is a Hi-Speed USB2 type which needs a driver update to
function at it's full speed, then a hardware upgrade is the only solution.
A 4 port Hi-Speed USB2 PCI card will cost you very little.

You'll need to identify the pc and look up it's specifications on the
manufacturer's website to determine whether it's USB ports are USB1 or USB2.
If you're lucky and it's a USB2 port working at USB1 speed you'll just need
the updated drivers to enable USB2 support.

Martin.

This is a hardware upgrade. The only exception would be if you've got USB
2.0 built-in to the board and you aren't running the proper drivers.

You can generally purchase a PCI USB 2.0 hub fairly inexpensively.

Yes it means a USB 2.0 port.
Changing from a USB 1.1 to a USB 2.0 requires both a hardware and software
change.
"not be optimal" just means that the transfer of files to the external drive
will not be a fast with a USB 1.1 port as a USB 2.0 port. If you are not is
a rush you have no problem.
