I, too, have been having problems getting my system to recognize Flash
Drives. I am getting the message 'USB Device not recognized. One of the USB
devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not
recognize it'.

My system is a Dell Dimension 8400 with 1.02gb memory and Microsoft Windows
XP Home Edition. The version is 5.1.2600 with Service Pack 2 installed. The
BIOS version is Dell A03 with a 10/11/2004 date. Also installed is a Dell
Printer and an external hard drive both with a USB connection.

I tried disconnecting the external hard drive and inserting a flash drive in
another USB port. That seemed to correct the recognition problem. However,
I should not have to do this every time I want to use a flash drive.

When I reattached the hard drive the flash drive was not recognized. I
pulled up
the Device Manager and viewed the USB Serial Bus Controllers. The list
includes:
'Intel(R) 82801 FB/FBM USB Enhanced Host Controller - 2658
" " " " " " "
- 2659
" " " " " " "
- 265A
" " " " " " "
- 265B
" " " USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C
Unknown Device
USB Composite Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Printing Support
List of 5 USB Root Hub'

I have reviewed many posts in this forum on the subject and am somewhat
confused on a resolution. The system summary indicates the processor is:
'X86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~ 3391 Mhz'

I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Thanks.

You can try diskmgmt.msc, for it looks like your external harddrive and
any USB drive you connect have been given the same drive name.
