USB Problem

I have a problem with an error popping up from the system tray
continuously, "USB Device Not Recognized". I have a wireless mouse and
palm cradle attached to the system, no problems until this morning,
when the mouse quit working. I tested the palm, won't work. I use a
flash drive, never had any problems, but now it won't work either.
Nothing even twigs when I plug in any USB device. I have deleted all
USB devices in device manager, I have updated my BIOS and inf drivers,
and the problem persists. I'd really prefer not to reformat, but I'm
out of ideas. Any help is much appreciated.

You also deleted Controllers & Hubs ? If so when you rebooted,
did XP redetect (enumerate) them again ? I would enable the Sys
environment variable DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices and
set it's value to 1. Re-enter Device Manager, Click View, tic/check
"Show Hidden Devices". Then re-examine the Universal Serial Bus
category - also check/verify there isn't an "Other" category. You
may some phantom entries that are causing issues. You may need
to update the Chipset Driver package for your motherboard.

Then again, it could be that your motherboard is shot also. (It's a
possibility if it got something that I believe is called "latch-up"; it's
well-known on especially some Asus P4 motherboards but can happen to other
motherboards as well.) If you want to avoid replacing the motherboard, you
might be able to get by with an internal USB hub, but remember that the
ports on the USB hub will be the only ones that should work correctly.

I did delete controllers & hubs, and XP does re-detect them. then the
error bubble starts popping up again from the systray. There is never
an Other category in device manager, but in the USB branch there will
be an unknown device. I have updated the chipset drivers and the BIOS.
I'll try the environment variable and see if it gives me any clues. Thx

I've not run into the latch up problem, but I'll do some snooping. This
system has only been in service for about 10 days, so could be a MB
failure. Thx for your help.
