usb problem in XP Home

Hi

I'm having problems with my USB devices. When I unplug them and plug them
back in, Windows has suddenly decided it doesn't recognise them and informs
me that they have malfunctioned. They have all been working fine up until a
few days ago. Sometimes I get the message when I haven't been plugging or
unplugging and then it's hard to know which device it's referring to.

I have a Belkin Hub with 7 ports, 4 ports at the back of my pc and two at
the front. It seems that the pcs own usb ports are the ones giving me
trouble.

I checked out the Knowledge Base and this kind of issue coming out of
Hibernation is listed but my errors are occurring all the time, not just when
I've come out of hibernation.

Does anyone know what might be the problem?

Also, can someone tell me how to understand the usb info in Device Manager?
What's the difference, for instance, between a Generic USB Hub, A USB
Composite Device, USB Mass Storage Device and USB Root Hub? I've got 13 usb
devices connected to my6 pc and yet in Device manager I've counted 17.
