USB powered scanner

I'm considering the Visioneer 7300 flatbed scanner. Unlike previous
scanners and printers I've bought, this product has a bus powered USB,
so no power cable is needed. Are there any drawbacks to this
configuration?

I just got a CanoScan LiDE 60 (primarily because it was the only
scanner local stores carried that also showed up as supported
under linux), and was surprised to find that it was USB poweered.
It doesn't scan quite as fast as the older scanner I had with
an enormous powercube that was impossible to plug it conveniently,
but it seems to work fine, I haven't noticed any problems with it.
It also takes up a lot less space than the older scanner.

Here's another happy camper with a CanoScan LIDE....

Noticeably handier when I need to take it somewhere too - no brick/power cord to
hassle with.

Not really, except that it will always be powered up unless you pull out the
USB Plug.

These scanners use a CIS (contact image sensor) technology. It has the
advantage of lower power draw (no need for wall power) and a smaller
more portable scanner, but has the disadvantage of lower depth of field-
if that matters to you. (Can be a problem for objects that don't fit
flush to the glass)
