USB ports stopped working

The two USB ports at the FRONT of my computer suddenly stopped working
- while the two in the back seem to be ok (joystick and digital camera
are working only when plugged in at the back).

The device manager seems to be telling me that all is well. I've
tried examining everything under "Universal Serial Bus controllers"; on
the Properties tab for each item it says "This device is working
properly" and updating the driver doesn't do anything. One odd thing
is that when I choose "Scan for hardware changes" my screen blacks out
for a second.

Any suggestions? Do I have to go into the BIOS? That scares me.

Sounds more like the cables that run from the motherboard to the ports have
become disconnected or loose.

If you feel unsure about doing anything to your PC and it's not still under
guarantee, take it to the local PC store and let them look at it for you.
