usb ports not working

when I plug either my new sony camera or my flash drive into my computers usb
port it will recognize that they are there but cannot find the software to
install them. I've talked to a couple of people about this, and they think
one of the other devices installed through usb are corrupt. The only other
devices installed on the computer is my mouse, and my printer. I hope
someone can help me out here.

Did you install the software for camera before inserting the USB plug ?

If you look in Device Manager, Click View, tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices" - does your table include one named "Other" ? If so, then XP
has enumerated the devices (found them) but doesn't understand the
USB peripherals VID string. Because of this and no drivers provided
it likely placed them in the Other category.

Flash Drives do not require any 3rd-Party drivers and are natively
supported by XP. By the way is your machine using Service Pack 2 ?
and also have you updated the Chipset Driver package for your PC ?
