USB Ports not working

Help!... Hi. I'm having problems where my USB ports in XP are not working.
I have power going to the devices connected (eg. IPOD). When I connect a
ScanDisk card reader and enter a CompactFlash card the light flashes on the
reader.
I've tried to disconnect USB support from the BIOS and re booted and the USB
Controllers in the device manager window are gone. When I enable them in the
BIOS and reboot, they re-appear in the device manager window. However, USB
devices still do not work.
I've tried uninstalling all the USB devices in the Device manager under
Windows XP and when I reboot XP finds the Hardware, reinstalls devices but
the USB devices still do not work.
I would be most grateful if anyone has a suggestion!
Big Thanks!!

I would make sure that you are running at least XP Service Pack 1, and
update your USB drivers

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry.

Thanks for your help. No, there's no yellow questions marks. I've even
tried Restoring XP to an earlier restore point where I know I was up and
running OK. But, it has not helped. I'm thinking of re-installing XP.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Warning
and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Some of the motherboards require additional support drivers for the
installed chipset. USB chipsets and drivers can be in this category.
