USB ports not working for some devices

The USB ports on my PC have stopped working for certain devices only. Devices
such as my ipod, scanner & a card reader which used to work fine, no longer
work on any port and a new camera does not connect at all. Yet other devices
such as my bluetooth receiver, broadband DSL box & an old card reader still
work fine on any port. If I plug in any of the former devices it tells me
that an unknown device is connected. I know of no reason for this as I
upgraded to SP2 after this started happening. Can anyone help? Thanks. (P.S.
I am not a techie so please type in words of one syllable!!)

May be this means that USB connector no longer supplies enough power.
No idea how this can occur (of course, if these high power devices actually worked before...),
try to connect them thru a powered hub.

I have tried re-installing the drivers for these devices. It would seem
strange that there's not enough power as I have 6 ports with only one used at
the moment, whereas before I had 2 to 3 in full time use. A hub might be
worth a go though if it means I can use my equipment.

Oh, bully for you old chap..

I see why they went out of business, no model numbers aye..?

Have you tried anything suggested to you here bub, haven't the slightest
idea where your coming from or what you may have tried..?

Can't see your rig from this side of the Atlantic, and all that, you know..
It's not really the time to keep secrets, now is it, if you want someone to
help you, of course..

Have you tried a system restore to an earlier date..?

Hi,
I have reinstalled device drivers, which hasn't worked.
I haven't tried re-installing the USB drivers as I am worried that my modem
will no longer work and then I'm up poop creak but I'll probably just have to
bite the bullet on that one. In theory, should windows just re-install them
on start up?
I ran the UVC View program. As I say I'm no techie so maybe you can translate?

The port that my scanner was plugged in to gave this result:

I also looked at the DSL connection as I noticed in one of the posts that
you helped solve, another working cable had been the problem. I noticed that
the interface descriptors showed details such as this:

bInterfaceProtocol: 0xFF
*!*WARNING: must be set to PC_PROTOCOL_UNDEFINED 0 for this class
iInterface: 0x00

Could this be a problem?

Many thanks & Tally Ho!

Yes, you mentioned this..

Yes, ideally they should..
I ran the UVC View program. As I say I'm no techie so maybe you can translate?

Where's Uwe Sieber when you need him, Uwe..!

Investigate the link above, your call..
The port that my scanner was plugged in to gave this result:

Was the scanner actually connected when you received the above info..?
If not may be a bad port..?

The above looks very similar to my host controller, it has no devices
connected or showing..

Could this be a problem?

I can't actually remember the post per say, so, if it was as you say solved,
what was the solution as you perceived it to be..?

Many thanks & Tally Ho!

Your too kind, thank you for replying, and for putting up with my off the
cuff jousting.. :)

It could be you just need to bite the proverbial bullet, and try something
mentioned or as Pavel mentioned trying a powered Hub might be a safe and
pound worthy investment, if your that worried..?
With the limited info you provided on your rig, ie without a model #.. I
really can't zero in on your spec's, though it does seem the OEM had some
difficulties in supporting their customers, had problems with custom builds
or certain hardware configurations.. I hope you have your original setup
disks and were able to get copies of updated drivers before the OEM folded..?
I understand your concern, after reading this link,
(http://www.itreviews.co.uk/discuss/1161) it might serve you to think along
the lines of an upgrade to an established solvent OEM later down the road..

Sorry, I can't be more helpful, my techie abilities are at times wanting as
well..
Cheers

Hi

Yes the scanner was plugged in. Also the problem in the previous post was a
faulty cable which doesn't appear to be a problem here.

Believe it or not, for years Carrera came top in loads of reviews, & the
Octan was on a couple of A lists. They were obviously just waiting for me to
buy one before they crashed & burned - and furthermore, I would have still
been under warranty!! I can tell you that the PC has an ASUS P4S533MX
motherboard + Hyper-T, and I have found another post that said that ASUS
motherboards are notorious for acting up after 2 years so maybe its time has
come.

I'll just give whatever I can a go & then buy a nice safe
Dell/Sony/Compaq/Toshiba!!

Well, I think I need a break from all this stuff. I'll just take myself off
down the apples & pears & make myself a cup of nice Rosie Lee (Earl Grey of
course)!!

Thanks for your help.

Thank you Forbes, for you reply..

Might try unplugging the scanner and reconnect it to another USB port, see
if the UVC View tool reports the same error on differing ports.. try removing
the power to the scanner to clear it's memory, perhaps..?

Oh, read over some smashing (older) Carrera Octan reviews, I believe you old
boy, no doubt..

BTW..
The Everest Home app is a great cup of tea for identifying hardware,
creating reports, you can then cut & paste the actual info to provide detail
when needed..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Oh, perk-up a bit man, it's not got you in that much of a tizzy, has it..?

Perhaps a little Ale might be better suited for the task at hand, old chap..
If you need to boost your fearlessness level a bit, you know or just make
your tea a double, bags in no cream.. ;D

Post your results, give credit where due..
Cheers from the colonies..
