USB peripheral switch

2 pcs (not networked) are sharing a multifunction machine
via USB peripheral switch. Windows ME uses icon provided
by windows to safely unplug/eject hardware before
switching. "Unsafe removal of device" dialog box appears
every time windows 2000 switches, but shows NO devices in
add/remove hardware (WHY?) and the offered icon only
appears momentarily, so how safe is it? Will the pc crash
and work be lost?

You raise some good questions. I believe I would contact the switch
manufacturer regarding the method of switching and the interface it
presents to Windows 2000. The DOS based OS's are much more tolerant of
"rude" hardware switching.
