USB Mouse Problem

I just added an older IntelliMouse Explorer USB mouse to my HP Pavilion
ze5500. I downloaded the newest drivers from Microsoft. I'm having a problem
that occasionally the mouse stalls, I hear the USB disconnect sound and
occasionally a message pops up saying that the computer doesn't recognize
the USB connection. The disconnect only lasts for a second or two and then
the mouse starts to work again.

Any idea why this is happening? Didn't have this problem with the supplied
HP mini-mouse; just didn't like the "feel" of that mouse.

Thanks.

you may have a broken wire in the mouse cord. could also
be a poor connector on the mouse where it plugs into the
computer.
