USB Mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled

Any USB mouse is immediately blocked and uninstalled. The mouse is
recognized and works for 1 to 2 seconds. The machine is running XP SP2.

The mouse is recognized and workes for 1 to 2 seconds then the mouse is
usless, but the light is still on.

A PS/2 mouse will work fine.

Each time a mouse is connected, it is recognized, identified, and then XP
finally says the device is ready for use.

During that cycle I can often move the mouse pointer for 1 or 2 seconds,
then it stops working.

The mouse does not show up in the Device Manager. I tried a Microsoft and a
Logitech mouse. Both work fine in other machines.

I tried to add new hardware, and a USB mouse is not seen.

I've moved the PCI card to different slots. I even tried two different pci
cards. And I also tried connecting into the USB 1.1 port on the old Dell
Deminsion 4100 machine. Same events each time.

The USB ports continue to work, even though the USB mouse won't. I can even
run a non-powered external USB 2.5 hard drive from the port AFTER the USB
mouse stops.

The machine is acting like it has a virus, but I checked. AVG did find one
in my mail box and AVG disabled it.

There may also be some security setting somewhere, but I have not found such
a setting. Don't really know how to look for such a setting. I did turn off
the Windows Firewall.

I also tried starting in safe mode.

I looked in the BIOS and tried enabling and disabling legacy USB support.

I am logged-in as an administrator.

This seems to be a software or security problem.

Did you try using software designed for your particular mouse?

No, but wait. :) ...

The name and brand of each mouse, i.e, Microsoft and Logitech, were
identified by XP, and XP's balloon message says that the device is installed
and ready to used.

XP does not ask for software. The mice work fine on every other machine
without additional software.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you should do, it was just a thought. I've never had that
happen to me.

Re-install the mouse driver.

How?

What are the steps to re-install 'the' mouse driver, since the USB mouse
doesn't show up in the Device Manager? Which mouse driver?

Thanks.

If you purchased the mouse you should have received a CD with it. If it came
with the computer the manufacturer has provided you with a method to
restore..

That worked for one mouse, but the generic USB mouse driver/setup still
doesn't work for any other USB mouse.
