USB mouse, dell optiplex and windows xp

Hello Everyone,
I have a new Dell Optiplex GX620, dual core and the Dell USB mouse
freezes a 1...2 times a week, keyboard still works. I unplug it and
plug it back and it works. I was wondering if there is a problem with
USB , windows XP or my Dell PC/mose? When I had PS/2 mouse I never had
my mouse locking up. I called Dell they told me it is not the
hardware, first they told me this is a driver issue [how come if it
works right after unplug/plug back in?], next they said windows glitch
but I do not consider good explanations. To me everything that locks
up after a while it is hardware.
Thanks a lot

I have the same problem with different hardware.

I have tried two mice. I have tried different USB ports as well as that
round port (using the adapter).

It stil happens to me several times a day!

Thanks. John

Hello,

I suspect it to be hardware as well. Try changing to another mouse and see
if the problems persist.

Then Dell is probably right -- it's not the hardware. I would suggest that
some app you have running in the background is occasionally sucking
resources to a crawl. Or you are repeating some procedure that causes the
problem. Diagnostics are difficult if it's a background app, but a judicious
use of MSCONFIG might help you narrow down the problem. Prime suspects are
anti-virus (what brand are you using?) and background monitoring apps like
Dell's own "PC health" monitor (forget its actual name.)

Thanks for your response.

McAfee for me. I'm the one with non-Dell HW.

Could VERY well be McAfee. Try Avast (free for home use.) Much leaner and
some of the best detection stats in the industry.
