USB Mouse and Touchpad won't function after XP Pro update

Just got a Toshiba Satellite 5200 laptop with XP Home - I
did the update to XP Pro and after the first Windows
update (SP1 express) the computer came back up but neither
my USB Mouse nor my touchpad "Toshiba cpad" would
respond.

Anyone seen this happen before?

Toshiba tech support helped me fix it - I just uninstalled
all the USB stuff, and on reboot everything came up.
(Oddly in the hardware manager there wasn't even a
category for mice!)
