USB memory stick needs drivers???

P

Pat

My memory stick that Windows XP automatically recognised and installed
drivers for now cannot run under Vista as it is asking for a driver that I
never had. Isnt this a big leap backwards?

Pat, are you using some security handling on the USB memory stick?
I've seen that those require drivers that might not play in Vista..

Must be your usb stick, i just tried all 3 of mine all worked right away
1 transcend 2 memorex travel drives

Yeah, I've tried four and they all worked straight away. (Only one was fast
enough for ReadyBoost, though).

This is so frustrating! I tried inserting the memory stick under Win Xp andd
there was no problem with it. When I looked in Device manager, the driver
installed for this device is USBSTOR.SYS
When I run Vista, it asks for a driver so I have tried pointing it to the
driver in xp\system32\drivers but no joy. There is also a similair driver in
vista\system32\drivers called USBSTO.SYS but Vista still will not recognise
this as a driver for my card. Can any one tell me what driver Vista is using
for their memory cards?
Thanks,
Pat

My USB Card Readers (mounted in my Dell 3007 monitor) are using WUDFRd.sys
and WpdFs.dll as their drivers.

I have that .sys file but not the .dll one, perhaps that is my problem.

I also have found that WIN/Vista does not recognise all USB devices. Even the
"Add Legacy" does not work.

There seems to be a major change that went in for non-microsoft drivers.
Devices that worked under WIN/XP will not necessarily work under WIN/Vista.
Even this keyborad and mouse (Logitech), thought they work, are not
recognized by Vista.

I am going to try and hack the Vista to get it to work, ortherise I just
have an expensive paperweight.

Hi there - after some batlle I can tell you sth. I've installed Windows XP
driver for my Apacer Pendrive with a peace of work. My Vista needs drivers
for any usb device plugged in - i.e. Kingston pen drive or Bluetooth device
what was not necessary with XP running. Strange? For me of course is very
strange because I didn't have any problems with Windows XP...

Here is the solution for pen drive (you are must to have got acces to
Windows XP installed drive):
- copy usbstor.inf and usbstor.sys placed in WinXP folders (Windows\INF and
Windows\system32\drivers) on the some location on your disk.
- plug in device with Vista running
- when it is not recognized place to location where you saved these two
files above
- when you vista recognize mass storage device you will get information
about inproper INF section, and the second device will be unknown in your
device manager
- try to actualize driver for unknown device and point Vista to find driver
into your c:\windowsvistadir\ [x] with subdirectories

in my case it solution works.
you can find the problems with any point try to ask again.

That explains my problems. I hack my registry and MMC to get the default
pluig-and-play drivers for the USB & Firewire equipment I am moving from my
older WIN/XP to my new WIN/Vista. I was able to knock down the "install
drivers" messages but the apart from my keyboard and mouse, no other
USB/Firewire device will work.

If your solution is correct, that limits me to what existing USB/Firewire
hardware I can move to my new system. Many USB devices, like Thumb drives, do
not really have drivers that come with them. Plug-and-Play in WIN/XP was
great, but with it being "damaged" in WIN/Vista that will hamper my adoption
of the new system.

I will try setting my new "Vista" as a dummy server and continue to use my
existing desktop until WIN/Vista SP1.

Michael,
The reply from Rafal sounds interesting but the language barrier and my
limited knowledge is enough to throw me off. You seem to have a better grasp
of what he was saying, could you explain it better for me?

Basically what I read was that WIN/Vista Plug-and-Play does not operate as
well or the same as WIN/XP Plug-and-Play.

I noticed simularly that in XP, when I plug in a USB device that *does not*
have proprietary drivers, Plug-and-Play choose one from a basic set of
drivers that come with WIN/XP, i.e. the device is WIN/XP compliant.

When I plug the same device into *my* new Vista, Plug-and-Play does
recongnize that it needs to find a driver, *but does not*. During said
plugging, if you choose the option for "browse" and set the directory to
C:\WINDOWS - or what ever you named the directory - it will find its basic
set of drivers... but there is not reliablity that these will work for each
device. There is an "Add Legacy" in MMC, but it has the same problem in
locating these basic set of drivers.

If the *basic* driver is not found on C:\WINDOWS, you could try copying the
old one from XP to Vista, but be very careful that you are copying a system
file *that does not previously exist* in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32.

In a nutshell;
1) If your USB/Firewire device is listed as Vista-compliant, very few are at
this time, they should be able to work, but you might have to change the
browse point to C:\WINDOWS

2) If your USB/Firewire device does include its own drivers, use them and
they may work.

3) If your USB/Firewire device relies on Plug-and-Play base set of drivers,
try them first.

4) If your USB/Firewire device relies on Plug-and-Play base set of drivers
but they do not work, copy the drivers from WIN/XP only if they filename does
not previously exist in WIN/Vista.

5) If your USB/Firewire device relies on Plug-and-Play base set of drivers
and the previous instructions do not get you closer to a solution, you are
out-of-luck.

Bottom line is that Plug-and-Play in Vista does not work all that well yet.
I was able to find in my USB keys that my Sony memory stick does work, but my
LaCie USB's do not. It is potluck on using my current hardware from WIN/XP in
my WIN/Vista.

I have a similar problem with a NEW notebook Acer TM8215 wlmi (Vista
Ultimate) and all sort of usb devices. Hard disk or pen drives work randomly
(also if they are usually shown in the device manager). Often Win searchs for
the driver without being able to install it. The system is not able to remove
them properly (the light keeps on flashing).
There are a lot of threads about Vista and usb problems. The Microsoft patch
did not help. Some times the devices work but with a lot of errors. I can
not believe it (Vista is very expensive). I do not think my problem is
hardware related. Any solutions? I'm thinking to give back yhe computer and
get a new one with XP.

I do not think it is so much a hardware/driver problem as that WIN/Vista was
rushed through development & deployment and the 3rd party vendors did not
have a chance to catch-up w/Vista-related changes.

With new hardware that says Vista-compliant, it works fine. For some 3rd
party, e.g. Logitech, they have some fixes that work. For other 3rd party,
there either is a fix in development or not.

IMHO I would suggest that you partition your hard drive for a "document"
folder and dual-boot WIN/XP & WIN/Vista. Share the "documents" when you have
need of hardware that is funny w/Vista.
