USB memory key U3 support

Is there a way to disable USB memory key U3 support. We are a school system
and we want our students to use USB memory keys, but don't want them
executing programs from the device.

Is there a way to force XP Pro to consider a USB key with U3 support as just
a standard USB key?

Does the school supply the USB drives to the students? If the school does
supply the USB's then replace them with USB's that don't have U3 support. If
not there is nothing you can do. You can't delete the U3 support off
student's personally owned USB's. You could tell students that USB's with U3
support are not allowed to be used within the school network. All USB's
would have to be checked before use on the network, could get
tricky..because this technology is becoming the norm in USB's.

If you want to get rid of U3 support on the USB drives you do own, have
then have a look here.

Wait! You're about to throw out the part that makes your drive smart.

But how do you police USB's brought into the school that might have U3
support...sounds like a headache because there is no fix that can be
downloaded and installed to stop a U3 enabled USB even if autorun and
autoplay are turned off in the registry, it just stops it automatically
starting but can still be used manually.

Did you know you can install and run applications from *every* USB flash
drive? Checkout http://portableapps.com/ to see all the great apps that
can be installed to any regular USB flash drive.

Yes, I've used portable apps (FF & TB) before on non-U3 flash drives and
like 'em. Have a ?? though, has anyone removed U3 from a U3 drive and
regretted doing so later on? AIUI, there's no way to restore U3 once
you remove it.

Thx!
