Note: 2nd posting for this message. Still hoping for ideas. Is there a more
approriate news group?

My Dell laptop with XP pro keeps dropping USB devices. On boot-up all USB
devices work
fine. After a short time they dissappear. Investigation through the control
panel provides the following message:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

Uninstalling the devices and re-installing works for s short period and then
the devices dissappear with the same error.

Updating to the latest USB drivers has not solved the problem.

Any ideas or suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

If there is a BIOS setting for Enable Legacy USB Devices, set it and see
if that helps. Disable Allow the computer to turn off this devices to
save power in the USB Root Hub. Do you have the required chipset
drivers installed, if these are required? If the USB devices are
connected with an external hub, perhaps it is a power issue and external
power is required. Also, you might Google Groups your laptop model and
"USB" and see what turns up.

Q

Have you tried a replacement USB cable? I have already had two dud cables
which I have replaced with Belkin cables, in both cases problem solved!

Thanks for the response. The same problem occurs with all my USB devices.
This eliminates cables.

Peter

Thanks for the response.Enabling USB legacy in the BIOS did not solve the
problem.

I'll check out teh google newsgroups.

There is a fix for this in the "Windows" section of windows update for XP.
Win XP availability of USB 1.1 and 2.0 (KB822603).

You might try the microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware group, but it
sounds to me like a defective USB controller on the motherboard

Thanks for the reponse. The upgrade contained in KB822603 solved the problem
for the laptop when it is not docked. But the problem still occurs when it
is docked.

As a next step I'll try a powered USB hub.

Is there a logfile I can check for error messages?

Additional ideas are appreciated.

Peter

give this a shot
under Device Manager and the USB ROOT hub(s) properties and Power tab, disable (uncheck) the allow windows to power down option.
to insure it takes, might totally power down the computer and then power it back up.
