USB issues

I recently tried to install an interal USB media card reader into my
mom's computer (which I built for her). She already had a Sandisk
external Flash Card reader which was working fine, but wanted the other
card readers as well. The motherboard (Soyo KT600 Dragon Plus 2.0) has
two USB headers, and a separate header for an internal USB device (like
the card reader). The problem is that as soon as I plugged the card
reader into the header and turned the computer on, the computer stopped
recognizing all of the USB ports on the computer. Once I unplugged it
again, the built in ports on the back were detected, but the case ports
on the front still don't work. Also, the external flash card reader now
shows as an "unknown device," when it was working perfectly before.
I've double- and triple-checked the motherboard documentation and I'm
positive I plugged the internal card reader into the correct header.
Anybody have any suggestions what might have caused the problem, or
what might fix it?

I just found out that the front USB ports have not been tested, so they
might not have been working from the beginning. Also, the motherboard
is still covered under warranty (only for a few more days), so if it's
a possibiliity that it could be a problem with the USB headers it would
be nice to hear back as quickly as possible.

Thanks!

Since the USB ports and external card reader otherwise works fine, the
internal card reader may be incompatible/defective. I suggest you try a
different internal card reader or an external multicard reader(even better).

A few PCs have defective USB2 controllers. The problem is with a
particular Intel chipset and I came across it in a Gateway machine
that was purchases 15 months ago. The user bought a HP laser printer
and found it printed garbage on his PC. I found that gateway, HP,
andIntel support sites all described the same fault with the chipset.
There was a suggestion that alternative mobo chipset software would
work around the problem but I just ran to a computer store and bought
a name-brand USB2 PCI card for $35 that fixed the problem.

FWIW.
