USB Indicator Vanishes From Status Bar--How To Restore?

Normally, a small indicator icon appears in the bottom right of the
status bar when I connect a USB device like a thumb drive/flash drive
( it looks like a PC card being inserted into a computer, but appears
for USB devices as well).

Recently, this indicator has stopped appearing. This makes it difficult
to unmount USB devices (I can just rip them loose, but that is not good
for some devices).

Now and then the USB indicator appears momentarily in the right place
after a reboot, but vanishes.

I have not made any changes to my preferences regarding the status bar,
the bar is not fixed, unused icons are not hidden, etc.

Does anyone know how to deal with this? Thanks.

Hi there GG,

It may be due to the fact that your Hide Inactive Icons option is turned on.
You can tell by looking at the system tray and checking if there is a <<
symbol in it. If so, click on it and see if it appears.

If you would like to have this option disabled, right click on the toolbar
and click on properties. Then, uncheck the "Hide inactive icons" checkbox.

If you would like to leave the option enabled, then click on the Customize
button instead. Find the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and set the behaviour
to "Always Show"

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks, Will, but no change in the situation after following your
suggestion. I never have had Hide Inactive Icons turned on, but
checking it and then going into Customize did not do the trick either,
sorry.

Hi there GG,

You might want to read into this article and try some of the options in
here. It looks like the issue is experienced by a lot of people for
different reasons. http://winhlp.com/WxSystray.htm

Let me know how it goes!

One of the ideas in the article (log off then log on again without
rebooting) did the trick!

Thanks, Will!
