USB HD and Firewire ?

Hello,

I have just recently bought a casing to make my spare Hard Drive a USB Hard
Drive and it works great under XP Pro. Only thing is, its a bit slow, not
too much of a problem but i'd like it to be faster.

My PC is USB 1.1, so there lies the problem. I have looked into buying a
USB2.0 PCI card, but decided against as i was told i'd have to load Service
Pack 1 or 2 and i didn't want to because my PC works fine as it is and i've
heard people have problems after installing SP1 or 2.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, can i connect my USB HD to my Firewire
(asuming i get an adaptor/cable). The back of the USB HD is a small square
connector (like the one on the back of most USB printers, i.e. smaller and
squarer than USB socket), so if i got a cable with the firewire connector on
one end and the small square USB on the other end, then would that work ??
Or is there an adapter which will fit onto the end of the USB end which will
connect to my Firewire, and will that work ??

Any issues with this setup ??

Cheers

Why not just get a firewire case? And yes, you need to have SP1 to get USB
2.0 support.

If your system is clean & free from Ad/Spyware (run AdAware & Spybot Search
& Destroy, plus a full AV check - make sure you have the latest upgrades of
all three), definitely install SP2,
Almost all 'problems' you hear about SP2 are from people who have existing
problems with their OS before they start and/or don't bother following
instructions on closing down all non-essential running programs.
If you're installing SP2 (which will also automatically upgrade to USB2),
you do not need to install SP1 first, just forget about it.

I'm not planning on upgrading to any Service Pack, can i get the firewall to
work if i get the right cable or adaptor. I know i could have bought a
firewire cage, but, unfortunately i didn't know at the time i could, i'm
stuck with this one now.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for posting here.

I would like to give some suggestions here.

Basically, here is your situation:

We get a machine with IEEE 1394 port and USB 1.1 port.

We get a spare HD.

In order to make it useful, you buy a HD cage with USB 2.0 supported.

You want to know how to get it work under this machine.

Basically, what you needed is another PCI USB 2.0 adaptor for your machine.

Install the driver for it and it will work for this USB 2.0 HD box.

This doesn't require you upgrade the OS to XP SP1 or SP2.

The PCI USB 2.0 adptor should include a driver for itself. It will make
that USB 2.0 port work for you.

Hope this clear the situation.

If anything else is unclear, please feel free to post back.

Best Regards,

Jeff Qiu
