USB hardware won't install

R

ronald_kellis

Bottom line, I have tried to install three different USB devices and
none of them will install. I have four other USB devices (mouse, 2X
external HD and a Smart Card reader) working fine. I also have a USB to
serial cable installed. WinXP is up to date (even installed the !@#$
Windows Validation software so I could see if I needed any other
patches). System is a Compaq SR1630NX with an AMD Athlon.

Started with a HP All-In-One, and as the old printer had worked (and in
fact it printed the test page the All-In-One wouldn't) I took it back
as after dealing with the HP support I was done with it . Tried a
LexMark printer. Same issue, install routine abrubtly stops after the
prompt to plug in the printer. Same issue with a new WebCam (XP sees
the new hadware and the Windows install routine starts). System will
recognize my camera memory card and thumbdrive.

I have tried a new USB cable direct in to the PC and the webcam direct
to the PC. I accidently downloaded and did a partial install of the 64
bit driver for the HP All-In-One till I realized what I had done and
aborted the load. A couple of times while applying Compaq patches I
have gotten a message
c:\Windows\System32\Autoexesc.NT. System is not sutable for running
MS-DOS & MS Windows applications so I don't know if I compounded my
orginal problem beyond repair.

I have checked the system setting, and there are 15 USB enteries,
3X Generic USB HUb
The Cam
Standard enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller.
3X Standard Op[enHCD USB Host Controller
USB Composit Device
3X USB Mass Storage
3X USB Root Hub

As always, TIA

Once this is sorted, remember that USB devices nearly ALWAYS demand that the
software is installed BEFORE you even think about connecting the device to
the PC..... and the software will usually tell you precisely when to connect
it.

With All in One printing devices, there is usually a utility available at
the manufacturer's website to ensure that a complete uninstall is done. Run
them BEFORE you think about trying to reinstall the software to get your
printer(s) working again and always check for updated software packages at
the printer manufacturer's website(s).

No joy. I removed the printer, cam, and what was left of my old printer
(neither Lexmark or Logitech had any special removal software) and over
wrote the listed files all three different ways (copy and paste into
Wordpad, copy from the load directory, and from the rescue folder). I
followed the directions exactly (as I had in the past) and only
plugged in the printer (and later the cam) when told. The printer
install program hung and when I tried a second load after it told me to
plug in the printer, the text box simply disappeared and in the system
folder I had two yellow question marks. XP notices the new hardware,
but unfortunately, just pointing the wizard to the driver directory
doesn't work either.

Any other ideas?

Yes. The only way I could see to do it was by right clicking on the
USB.INI file for [Install] and no joy. They are trying to load
(install of the USB.INF per the HP site) and show as the yellow
question marks under device, not under the USB tree. The details show
they were attempts to install the root USB hub(s) (I had three). (I
looked in the USB.PNH file and it lists the install configurations for
different command sets, I am wondering if I have a chip set problem but
don't know what MB chip set the Compaq has). LOL, had to go back to old
keyboard tricks till I could get a PS/2 mouse.

You should be able to find the chipset drivers for your motherboard at
www.hp.com. It definitely indicates a problem in the ports (hardware)
themselves and not the external devices though.
