usb harddrive drive letter assignment doesn't retain

O

OM

Hi,

I have a pool of usb hard drives that are used for backup. I also have a
backup script that will copy files to these drives in a daily basis.

It appears that I can't assign a specific drive letter for these drives
permanently. I tried manually changing the drive letter (the one that I
used before) for all of them, but when they are reconnected, it will use
d: again, but not the one that I specified.

Does anyone know a solution for this?

Thanks

In Win XP Pro (and your drive plugged in), go to
Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

You should see the USB drive listed in the right hand pane, right click
on this drive and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths'.

This assigns a fixed drive letter to the USB drive.

Yes, I did all that, but it won't retain the drive letter if I
disconnect and reconnect it sometime later.

What changes on your system to keep causing the drive letter change?
When I plug mine in, they're always assigned the same letter. I have
drives A, C, D, E, G, H, M, N, that are fixed. My USB drives always
shows up as F (& I if two are plugged in).

It is a known @#%$ design in XP
Plug the USB
Go to the disk manager
Set the drive letter you want
Clik Add button, and select
Mount to empty NTFS folder.
Browse to the
directory to which you want to mount the drive.
Create a directory you want to mount to
Remove the drive letter and click
OK.
The USB drive has a permanent home inside your hard drive.

Thanks for all the input. As I mentioned, I need the specific drive
letter assigned for the usb drive. Mounting it as a folder doesn't work
for me.

yes, I tried changing drive letter within disk management many times and
it didn't work for me. I don't have problem on other XP machines.

I have no idea why this works, but if I use Partition Magic v8.05 when
I create the partition and assign it a drive letter, no matter what
machine I plug it into, it is always the same drive letter (which was
annoying since one time I plugged it into a machine that was using the
the same drive letter for a network drive, and my drive kept coming up
instead of the network drive).

The reason I say that I don't know what the deal is since the
Partiytion Magic on Hiren's disk doesn't even give you the option to
declare a drive letter. I don't know if the latest versions of
Partition Magic do this.
