USB Gone Funny

I am running XP Home with SP2

My USB (all 6 of them) suddenly does not recognize my memory sick or my Ipod.
They still recognize my IR dongle.
The memory stick works in other PCs.
This tells me that my USB ports are working and so is my memory stick & Ipod.
I've deleted the USB stuff including the ghost drivers.
I've reloaded SP2
Now I am stumped!
Is there a database of possible USB devices that may have become corrupt?
Or what else, short of reinstalling XP, can I check?

Suggestion: You might try this... I like to leave a few drive letters open
between the last partition on the local drives and all other drives (local
cd/dvd and mapped network). If there is no letter available in that range,
these little USB sticks often don't show up in Explorer.
