USB freezes

Anytime I turn on a device (scanner, MP3 player, digital
camera) that is plugged into either of my USB ports, my
computer freezes up. I see no answers in the event
viewers. THe device manager says everything is OK. Is my
USB controller bad? What does the Root Hub have to do
with this? I have an older Gateway 500 MHz with 256 Mb
RAM.
 
Check the device manufacturer's websites for the latest XP compatible
drivers for the devices using the USB ports on your system.
 
Check power supply for USB root hub(power tab) in Dvc
Manager.If it is 500mA it is fine.just try to uninstall
USB root hub & restart(if it is XP).
