USB flask disk key

Hi,

Can anyone please help. I have a 256Mb USB flash disk key
and I'm running WinXP Pro. However, my machine is only
recognizing the key at 24mb and I can't really work it
out.

I did notice that when I try to format it it will only
take FAT and not FAT32 or NTFS format. Do I have to use
something like Partiation Magic to fix it?

Regards
Bill

Not sure what you mean by a flash disk "key". I have a USB disk stick
(Creative Nomax Nx 128MB) which must use its own initializer program to
ready it. Can't use FORMAT or any real disk utility since it isn't really a
disk.

It might help if you gave some details on just exactly WHAT you are trying
to use, like the brand name and model. Then others using the same gear can
answer your question as to how they make theirs work.

I would try repartitioning the flash drive. Go to My
Computer->Manage->Storage->Disk Management and you should see the drive.
Delete the partition, create a new partition, and format FAT32. Note -- you
can only choose FAT or FAT32 for a flash drive. Drives are formatted FAT by
mfgs.

That is not true. I have a couple of Lexar flash drives (512MB and 1GB) and
I formatted them FAT32 using the standard format utility. They appear as
external usb drives to the OS.

Hi

Go to My Computer, right click on the flash drive and select format, choose FAT. Do not choose quick format
I use this method for my flash drive and it works fine

Hi Robert, I did all up until deleting the partition as I
can't see any options to delete it. Is there something
I'm doing wrong.

You help is much appreciated

Sorry I should have been more specific. There are so many
of these things and everyone calls them something
different. Your correct though its just a memory stick
that plug into the usb port.

However, I'm still not able to solve my problem.

I've tried this so many times Peter. The funny thing is
the supply (IBM) only make 2 sorts of memory keys. A 64mb
and 256mb. I don't know why my 256mb only gives me 24mb.

Any more ideas are most welcome.

I found the option to 'Delete Partition but it grey out
and therefore I can not select that option. Boy, this is
driving me crazy.

It looks like I gave you bad info. I wanted to verify the partition could
be deleted, but on my flash drive it cannot. All I can do is reformat the
existing partition if the drive's write-protect switch is off.

I looked at the specs on the drive and the only thing I noticed is it
doesn't state it's compatible with USB 1.1. Is it possible your USB port is
1.1 and the drive doesn't like it?

I looked at that as well. I actually tried it on both USB
1.1 and 2.0 and it has the exact problem.

Mmmmm
I might have to consult IBM themselves.

Thanks

Are you the same person that posted the original msg? It's just that I see
different 'From' address.

If nothing else works, you may want to try Fdisk that came with Win98
startup. You need to use it from DOS.

I am having a similar problem right now. I have a card that won't format.

I have an SD, 256mb, Toshiba memory card with a problem.

Originally it was in a camera. It won't format there.

I tried it in a Palm. It won't format there.

I have a 7in1 flash card, USB unit. It won't read or format there.

I have tried booting DOS from a floppy created from WIN98SE. The USB drivers
don't work. FDISK says "change fixed disk" and doesn't show the card.

I do get a message telling me that the disk unit ID is wrong.

Is there any low level format program for these cards? One that will brute
force format it?

Unfortunately, in order for you to do anything to your USB drive, you will
have to have motherboard that supports such device from DOS or have software
from the manufacturer that can do something about it.
