USB Flash Drive Problems

Keith

I am using XPE SP 2 with a custom shell. I launch an explorer window
from my shell app to copy files from a USB flash drive to the hard
disk.

When I copy and paste several folders (more than 10) with 20 to 100
small files (less than 1 meg) I get an error "Cannot copy 'file.txt'
cannot read from the source file or disk" where 'file.txt' is the name
of the file that it is trying to copy. I can copy the folder that it
fails on without any errors.

It appears that the USB drive resets (turns off and on again) and that
is why it can't read from the disk.

I have the USB mass storage device component added to my build and it
works just fine with smaller groups of folder/files.

I have used a 8 in 1 flash card reader with a 1 Gig Sandisk card and
also a 1 Gig Sandisk cruzer mini.

Is there some component that I should have besides the USB mass storage
device? I have searched the groups to find any description that would
lead me to an answer but I am getting nowhere. Any help would be
appreciated.

Regards,

Keith

For me it sounds more like a hardware problem.
Did you try a different flasdisk and/or card reader?
Is your USB power supply sufficient (just try to connect the card reader via
an active USB hub).

I had a similar behavior using a 2.5" harddisk with an USB to IDE adapter.
The harddisk was drawing too much current.

Burkhard,

Thanks for your reply.

I hadn't thought about it being a hardware problem. But I don't think
that is it. I have a good power supply to the USB hub. I have used
three different hubs on two different machines with the same software
configuration.

I will continue to include this idea as I work to solve the problem.

Any more ideas?

Thank you,

Keith.

Keith,

You find out if this is a hardware problem if you install XP Pro SP2 on that same target disk and test the flash disk copy from
there.
