USB FDD causes computer to restart

when i plug in my USB FDD (sony MPF82E) the computer restarts and continues
to do so. I have updated Windows XP professional and have no idea how to fix
this problem. I have fumbled through web sites with no success. Can someone
help me please.

Have you upgraded to the latest service pack? I know that many USB related
issues are fixed in there. Check to see if that device has been tested to be
compatible with XP, though I doubt that there should be any problem with a
Sony product.

Yes, I have put all the upgrades that I can find on the computer and the Sony
USB FDD is compatible.

Do other usb devices work in your computer's usb port? If not, there may
be a hardware problem with the port. It could also be as simple as a
failing or inadequate power supply. I'm not sure how much power a usb
floppy drive would pull. I wouldn't think it would be much, but don't
know for sure.

If other usb devices - like a different make/model usb floppy drive (you
could borrow one from a friend) - work fine, then there is probably
something wrong with your Sony drive.

I have tried a differednt USB FDD and it didn't work either. The Sony USB
FDD works fine on my old faithful computer. The only thing I did think of at
about 2am in the morning is that it was fine until I loaded my software for
my embroidery machine. Can the program cause problems?

I can't answer your questions about your embroidery software. If the USB
FDD worked fine before you installed the embroidery software and then
not afterwards, it would appear that something got changed by the
embroidery software. You might want to ask the embroidery software tech
support if this is a known issue.
