USB failure?

I am running XP SP2 (home). My computer has 2 USB1 and 2 USB2 ports with a 4
port hub plugged into the first USB1 with a multifunction printer and a laser
printer attached. A second 4 port hub in the first of the USB2 ports has an
inkjet printer and my wireless mouse/keyboard plus I use this to connect
memory flash stick and cameras. I recently tried installing a video-DVD unit
into the second USB2 port and ever since the machine is acting stupid!
Everything started running very slowly (keyboard and mouse were inoperative).
I used a serial mouse and PS2 keyboard to get into the machine but until I
had uninstalled a number of devices - including my printers, I couldn't get
the mouse and keyboard to work. All restore points were also wiped!
I now have only the USB2 - 4 port hub with mouse and keyboard installed and
the computer is working fine - until I try to make any change to USB
connections then everything stops again. I cannot plug in any new device nor
can I change the specific sockets for the devices I have installed.
How can i repair the USB operation??????

The last time I had this sort of problem, I ended up uninstalling the
various USB device drivers, and then the USB port/controller drivers. (Safe
mode may be needed.) I then rebooted, and let windows redetect the USB
ports/controllers. (This may be a multiple reboot process on some systems.)
Then when everything looks normal in Device manager, I reinstalled the USB
devices. A reboot may or may not be necessary between each device install.
Remember to follow the Mfrs install sequence, since some of the drivers are
installed before you connect the USB device, others after.
Motherboard chip set drivers are also a player on some systems.

It's best to research the currency of the drivers you are planning to
install. You may also find that some drivers are incompatable with others,
which may have caused your problem to begin with.

Hello Chuck'
It might be the power being used by the devices.
I believe there is a limit on each usb and as a total.
Have you been to:
Everything USB - they helped me.

I did forget to mention one annoying little detail. If you are going to
remove USB port and controller drivers, It's a very good idea to have a PS/2
mouse and at least a ps/2 keyboard handy.
They USB versions just might not work without the USB drivers. On reboot,
autodetect will usually work, but one never knows.
