USB External Hard Drive

I installed the current (today) high priority security patch on XP. Now I
cannot get my Maxtor hard drive to get past simply being recognized when I
plug it into my USB 1.0 port. The red write access light stays on unless I
unplug the power to the drive. After the recognition bubble appears and the
bleep sound, nothing happens in "My Computer" and I can't get "Add Hardware"
to work either. This is a simple storage device, a single partition. Need
help here!

Thanks-Pat

Click on Start>Control Panel> Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk
management.

Is your hard drive listed there?

Hi - The answer is no. I have tried that approach multiple times. I read
through all of the other posts here in this forum, also the suggestions in
the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and have attempted them all except for a manual
change to the (I think) config file. I am going to next try taking the disk
to another PC and try to save the data there because I really fear whatever
that patch was that I installed for a Security leak has messed with the
drive. Any other ideas will be appreciated. I have a 18 Mbytes of business
related data on that drive, which was a backup from my internal drive which
had to be re-formatted after a Win XP crash and burn.

Hi,
I have a very similar matter. My WInXP Prof SP2 is just not showing my USB
Maxtor 3200 Drive. It previously worked, I have another USB-HDD which still
works.

--> I do NOT see the drive in the device manager!
