usb external hard drive problem

Okay so I got this external hard drive which worked when I first
plugged it in to this Laptop. Then out of nowhere it gets disconnected.
I unplug and plug it back in.. now it recognizes it as an " Unknown
Device ".

I got it to work again by uninstalling all the USB Root Hubs and going
to Add New Hardware. .. but it just does it again ... disconnects and
then become an " unknown device "

Yeah and the hard drive works perfectly fine with other
laptops/computers

I know, first hand, that there are some mobo USB chips that are buggy
enough that a new HP color laser wouldn't work on it. This machine
would be 2 years old now, and is a Major Brand. The web sites of HP,
the PC maker, and Intel (maker of the mobo) all said the same thing.
The USB chip was flawed.

The USB port worked fine at 1.1 speeds.

For me the fix was to pop in a PCI usb card.
